Mystical Drone Music

“Music which contains drones and is rhythmically still or very slow, called “drone music”, can be found in many parts of the world, including bagpipe traditions, among them Scottish pibroch piping; didgeridoo music in Australia, South Indian classical Carnatic music and Hindustani classical music (both of which are accompanied almost invariably by the tambura, a plucked, four-string instrument which is only capable of playing a drone); the sustained tones found in the Japanese gagaku[9] classical tradition; possibly (disputed) in pre-polyphonic organum vocal music of late medieval Europe;[10] and the Byzantine chant’s ison (or drone-singing, attested after the fifteenth century). Repetition of tones, supposed to be in imitation of bagpipes, is found in a wide variety of genres and musical forms.” Wikipedia.

Simple Minimalist Study: Steve Reich’s Lawnmower

Made with Sawcutter 2, my favorite music software, this piece imitates the style of Steve Reich with its gradually increasing rhythmic syncopation.

Music in the Background

It is tiresome and draining to have our senses in continual focus. Take sound. Musicians, composers and music lovers alike are constantly and actively listening to music with a deliberate willful analysis. But there are times when we must naturally switch off and let sounds drift into our consciousness subliminally and passively. On a country walk we may hear a shepherd playing a flute in the distance and hear the sound of his sheep and his dog barking. Outside, sounds naturally drift on a summer breeze, often just within the realm of our hearing, dreamily; waves braking on a seashore, children playing, wind and rain, waterfalls, babbling brooks, birdsong, wind chimes, a band playing in the distance, carried on a breeze for an instant then lost, swallowed up by the wind and the distance.
We would go mad if we attempted to focus on every sound we heard – it would be like trying to concentrate on each step as we run down stairs. Some sounds – even some music – is best absorbed within the context of other sounds and of the experience of non-focusing upon it. Such sounds are best appreciated on the edge of our senses. Attempting to focus on it will result in a loss of its effects on the mind.

18-800

“18-800” is an 18 minute work based on an idea where someone took a small section of Steve Reich’s  Music for 18 Instruments and slowed it down 800 times – producing beautiful Ambient music. I followed a similar method, but added a simple repeated harmonic sequence and several synths and effects to produce Ambient music that is powerful and mysterious as well as relaxing.

This piece can be used for any type of meditation, relaxation technique or for sleep assistance.

 

 

Ambient Space Dimensions

A major theme of my music is the night. No, not the nightlife of bars or dance halls; the night of dreams; the night of silence; the night of dark landscapes and mysterious architecture. As a child I frequently woke during the night and looked out of my bedroom window to see a totally different world, which I believed was populated with other beings. In my dreams I would wander these night landscapes and memories of these dreams have dominated my Psyche. Decades of experience of `sleep paralysis’ have led to an appreciation of the reality of this other world which the ambiance of this album expresses. The mystical, other-worldly and transcendental quality of this album can take you to your own dream landscape.

Album: Music for Moving Meditation

Music for Moving Meditation was inspired by the Chinese Wand exercise system. After teaching Tai Chi for about thirty years I came across a book about these wonderful exercises written by American Bruce Johnson. Johnson recommended `down tempo’ music to accompany the exercises. Although traditional Chinese music is popular and customary at Tai Chi classes and events, when I wrote my book Jiangan – The Chinese Health Wand (Singing Dragon Books, London 2011) I decided to write music especially for the character and quality of the wand exercises. There is a constant ebb and flow with the movements, in tune with natural deep breathing or waves braking on a shore. I also wanted to capture the meditative aspect as the mindful movements raise the consciousness to higher levels. The music in this album is also suitable for Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi or any other gentle relaxation class. The aural landscapes of gentle pad sounds are conductive to flowing expansive movements.
